Although they are arrangements, these were first published in 1896 by Simrock, Brahm's publisher, while the composer was still alive and so Brahms must have known of and accepted the arrangements. The notation of the old Simrock edition has been assimilated with that of the original vocal version, especially with regard to the dynamics. Some of the cello's closing passages have been rendered more effective and fingering and phrasing have been modernised both technically and stylistically.
