ABRSM Flute books for Practical and Performance Grades

If you are taking a Practical Grade, you will usually need the main repertoire book plus the matching technical and aural support. If you are taking a Performance Grade, start with the grade-matched repertoire book and then check whether you also need an own-choice score.

For ABRSM Flute Practical Grades, most customers should buy the books that match their exact grade:

• Flute Exam Pack from 2026 or the matching Flute Exam Pieces book
• Flute Scales & Arpeggios and Sight-Reading, ABRSM Grades 1–5 for Grades 1 to 5
• Flute Scales & Arpeggios, ABRSM Grades 6–8 and Flute Sight-Reading Tests, ABRSM Grades 6–8 for higher grades
• Specimen Aural Tests for the relevant grade band

Buying by exact grade helps you avoid ordering the wrong cycle or technical book.

For ABRSM Flute Performance Grades, start with the Flute Exam Pieces from 2026 book for your grade so you can build your programme from current list pieces. If your teacher is working from an earlier permitted edition, check the overlap guidance before ordering.

You may also need to buy an additional own-choice score for your fourth piece. Performance Grades do not use separate Scales, Sight-Reading or Aural books as assessed exam components.

Usually, buy 2026. The 2026 Flute cycle is the current place to start when you want the latest books for current study and exam preparation.

You would normally only buy 2022 titles if your teacher has told you to use an overlap book or you are replacing a copy you already work from. If you are unsure, check the latest overlap guidance before you order.

For Practical Grades, yes. Your repertoire book covers the pieces, but you will usually also need the matching technical books.

For Grades 1–5, the shop carries a combined Flute Scales & Arpeggios and Sight-Reading book. For Grades 6–8, scales and sight-reading are split into separate books. For Performance Grades, no, because there are no separate Scales, Sight-Reading or Aural components in that route.
