ABRSM Tuba FAQs: choosing the right books
How do I choose the right ABRSM Tuba book for my grade and instrument?
Check three things first: your grade, your exam route, and whether you play B flat, C, E flat or F tuba. That tells you which technical book to buy and helps you choose the right repertoire book from the Tuba collection.
Syllabus Finder is the quickest way to confirm the correct combination before you order.
Which Tuba books should I buy for grades 1-5?
For Grades 1-5, many customers start with a repertoire book such as Shining Brass, Book 1 or Brass Mix, Book 1, then add the matching technical books for their instrument if they are taking a Practical Grade.
Use the B flat, C, E flat or F tuba technical title that matches the instrument you play.
Which Tuba books should I buy for grades 6-8?
For Grades 6-8, start with the repertoire source named for your level, then add the matching Scales and Arpeggios and Sight-Reading book for your tuba type if you are taking a Practical Grade.
For Performance Grades, your main purchase is usually the repertoire source and any own-choice score you need.
Which Tuba technical book matches my instrument?
This collection includes separate technical books for B flat Tuba, C Tuba and F Tuba. For E flat Tuba, the current technical books are the shared Baritone (bass clef), Euphonium (bass clef), E flat Tuba (bass clef) titles.
Check the full product title before you buy so you order the right version.
Should I buy Shining Brass or Brass Mix for Tuba?
Shining Brass is often the main starting point for graded Tuba study, while Brass Mix works well as extra repertoire and lesson material.
Many customers buy the book named in Syllabus Finder first, then add the other title as extra music.
Do I need the matching piano accompaniment books for Tuba?
If you want to rehearse or perform accompanied pieces properly, it is usually helpful to buy the matching piano accompaniment as well. The collection includes accompaniment books in B flat, E flat and F where available.
If you are buying for solo practice only, you may choose to start with the main instrument book first.
Do I need separate Scales and Arpeggios and Sight-Reading books for ABRSM Tuba Practical Grades?
Yes, for Practical Grades most customers buy both. Your repertoire book covers the pieces, but the technical books help you prepare the rest of the assessed work.
For Performance Grades, no. You normally focus on repertoire and any own-choice music instead.
Where should I check official Tuba requirements before buying books?
Quick path:
- Open Syllabus Finder and confirm grade + route
- Check the latest Brass guidance on ABRSM if you need to verify the instrument-specific requirement
- Buy the matching titles in the Tuba collection
