Viola exam books and repertoire

Start with your grade and exam route in our Syllabus Finder. Check the publication and edition named for each piece before buying. Our repertoire collections offer music for lessons and performance; a book’s general level does not mean every piece is listed for an exam.

The Viola Exam Pack from 2024, Initial Grade contains nine selected pieces, three from each of Lists A, B and C, plus scales and sight-reading. It supports both Practical and Performance Grades at Initial Grade. Check the route requirements when choosing your programme.

Book 1 offers repertoire for Initial Grade to Grade 1, Book 2 for Grades 1 to 2, and Book 3 for Grade 3. Each book includes varied arrangements with piano accompaniments. Some pieces appear on the from 2024 syllabus; check the list and edition for your chosen piece.

Both series offer arrangements from different periods for lessons and recital repertoire. More Time Pieces, Volume 1 covers Grades 1 to 3, and Volume 2 covers Grades 4 to 7. Choose a volume with your teacher, and check the current syllabus before selecting an exam piece.

Practical Grades assess three pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests. Our separate viola scales and sight-reading books cover Grades 1 to 5 and Grades 6 to 8. Choose the matching band and prepare aural skills too. The Initial Grade Exam Pack already includes scales and sight-reading for that level.

Performance Grades assess a four-piece programme: one piece from each of Lists A, B and C, plus one own-choice piece. There are no separate scales, sight-reading or aural tests. Check the official viola requirements for the programme and editions you need. You only need another score if your chosen music is not already in books you own.

Audio provision varies by title. The Initial Grade Exam Pack description explains that recordings of its nine pieces and accompaniment-only tracks are available through major streaming and download services. Check each product description for its audio information before ordering.

The viola from 2024 syllabus is valid from 1 January 2024 until further notice. Use the official viola syllabus or our Syllabus Finder to check your grade, exam route, chosen pieces and required editions before buying.
